In his previous books David Gentleman has brilliantly evoked the architecture and spirit of Britain and London. Now for the first time he goes beyond the shores of his own country and gives us his portrait of PARIS,a city he has loved and constantly returned to since his first visit there as a boy. In this beautiful book he expresses his reactions on seeing the city's glories afresh each time he visits the capital: the green bronze columns topped by gilded figures, the leafy boulevards, the fine avenues and splendid public spaces, the Metro, the Luxembourg Gardens, the celebrated historic buildings and - with his perceptive eye for the not so obvious and well-known - the architectural survivors which Gentleman isolates from the clutter of other buildings around them. In his marvellously fresh watercolours he conveys the pervasive sense of history represented by such splendours as the fine seventeenth-century buildings and courtyards of the Marais and the Faubourg St Germain. And what gives this book its unusual vitality is his remarkable evocation of the daily life of Paris: the cafes with their tables on the pavements, the visitor's Paris of the museums and of Montmartre and the Champs Elysees, the uninhibited life going on in full view, the couples sitting on the river banks and enjoying each other's company. But he does not ignore the intrusions of recent years: the Americanisation of cafes and shops, and today's (then 1991) new commercial palaces which light up the Paris skyline with international brand names. The size of Paris makes it possible to see it whole - to take it all in,as it were,in one eyeful - and in this enchanting book,in colour throughout, Gentleman records in his own inimitable way the majesty and verve of this life- enhancing city. David Gentleman, born London in 1930,he was educated at Hertford Grammar School. Studied at St. Albans School of Art (1947-48) and the Royal College of Art,London (1950-53),where he later taught (1953-55).Since then,he has worked freelance from his studio in Camden Town,London, making drawings, watercolours and lithographs of landscapes and buildings, and designing murals, posters, bookjackets, postage stamps, and a wide variety of other design and illustration commissions. His book illustrations have included limited editions of a number of classic works as well as books by several contemporary writers, some of them for children. He has written and illustrated several children's books and one on design,as well as a book of watercolour drawings of contemporary Britain. Many of his illustrations have been engraved on wood and some lithographed; more often, however,he draws in pen and ink with watercolour. As an illustrator,he uses pen and ink, wood engraving, and watercolour. His work is always immaculately presented; his wood engravings reveal a master of pastiche; convincingly and often humorously adopting the style and icongraphy of his subject's period. His work includes murals for the London Underground at Charing Cross station, illustrations and lithographs for English and American publishers and watercolours of France, Italy,Africa and the Pacific and many parts of the British Isles. He first visited India in 1967 to illustrated Kipling's 'The Jungle Book' and he spent two years travelling throughout India to make drawings for his book,'David Gentleman's INDIA (1994) - see my book ID rja821718 for a UK,Qrto HB+dw/dj,SIGNED,1st edn example.Elected RDI (1970); member AGI.
